Because foresight in the sense we are exploring here, you will face challenges for both yourself and applying foresight in practice. Here are a few that you need to be alert to.

Information Overload When You Scan

Scanning becomes easier over time. If you scan regularly, you will become an ‘unconsciously competent’ scanner. But there will always be a lot of information out there. How do you deal with it so you don’t go into information overload? Remember your scanning anchor, while following up leads that look as they might be useful. Trust your insight and intuition about what is credible and what is not is essential – you will soon learn how to identify good sources and what matters. Over time, you will be able to determine fairly quickly what is important and what is not. Filtering tools will help too – as discussed in Chapter 7, there are digital tools now that will help you both do scanning and organise it to save you time.
